Safety Precautions & Preparedness Guidelines
Roadway Safety
-
Avoid Water-Covered Roads: Drivers along low-lying routes near the Intracoastal Waterway and coastal marshes should allow extra travel time. Do not drive around barricades or navigate vehicles through standing water of unknown depth.
-
Protect Property: Move vehicles, outdoor equipment, and flood-prone property to higher elevation near tidal creeks and shorelines before high tide cycles.
Ocean & Beach Safety
-
Strong Longshore Currents: Strong currents moving parallel to the beach (east to west) can easily sweep swimmers and surfers off their feet and push them into hazardous areas like rip currents, jetties, and piers.
-
Check Lifeguard Guidance: Swimmers are urged to check with local beach patrols or lifeguards before entering the water and exercise extreme caution near ocean surf.
