Safety Precautions & Preparedness Guidelines
Roadway Safety
-
Avoid Water-Covered Causeways: Drivers traveling along beach access causeways, low-lying roads near the Intracoastal Waterway, and adjacent tidal creeks should allow extra travel time. Never drive around barricades or through standing water of unknown depth.
-
Protect Property: Move vehicles and flood-prone belongings to higher elevation near tidal waterways ahead of high tide cycles.
Ocean & Beach Safety
-
Hazardous Longshore & Rip Currents: Strong longshore currents pushing north to south can knock swimmers off their feet and carry them into rip currents, piers, and jetties.
-
Check Lifeguard Flags: Swimmers and surfers should check with beach patrols and lifeguards before entering the water and exercise heightened caution along Grand Strand shores.
